SYSTEM HUMAN:
ALGORITHMIC GROWTH

While looking at patterns emerging from the simplest things in life, like a duck swimming in a pond creating ripples or a colony of ants marching along their paths, you come to realize that reality is a beautiful system that just works perfectly. We just happened to be able to be aware of this.
This work puts you face to face with an infinite amount of random computer generated trees.
“The development of an organism … may be considered as the execution of a ‘developmental program’ present in the fertilized egg. … A central task of developmental biology is to discover the underlying algorithm from the course of development.”
~ Aristid Lindenmayer
These trees grow in a way that resembles how trees in our reality would grow. For this growth pattern a specific algorithm is used called: L-System, short for Lindenmayer System.
It is an algorithm that uses simple mathematical rules to determine how many branches to grow, in which direction and when to stop growing. Lindemayer came up with this algorithm after studying plants for a really long time. He found that plants ranging from grass to trees all have these patterns they follow, and certain behaviours they seem to all use in a different way.
All these unique plants can be broken down into logical mathematical rules. This fascinates me as an artist who likes to play with our perception of reality. L-Systems are fractals, fractals are plants, plants are infinitely repeatable patterns.
We are infinite.

SYSTEM HUMAN: DYING GALAXY

On my journey to visualize the connectedness of all things, my first stop ended up being in the cosmos
I find immense comfort and peace in the infinity of everything…
Patterns that never stand still, never complete, always growing.
Galaxy, metro system, tree.
Seemingly distant concepts that are more connected than we often think.
Here, in the infinite web, I find peace.
Here you see a dying galaxy, the supermassive black hole is not capable of maintaining its rotational force. By shifting the position of your body you can influence this unstable galaxy and observe the chaos that will spread across the countless stars and planets.
In this work I experiment with the idea of instability within the heart of a galaxy. You could say that without a somewhat stable black hole at the center of our galaxy we would probably not exist. Yet we still have so many questions about why this is true.
With the project “System Human” I want to work towards a combination of different works in different mediums. With this project I want to show how I have been seeing these phenomenal systems at work. This reality we live in is so complex but when you actually take your time you will see, while society seems to be blind to these patterns and networks, it is what is keeping us alive.
Everything is connected

“Welcome! Sorry…”

“Welcome literally everyone, have look into a cross-artistic research about being (fe)male made by some (fe?)males for you dear audience, you are (fe??)male as well. Also – especially – if you are not a (wo?!?)man. Sorry.”
An interactive performative video-exhibition
This was a collaborative project I made with a lot of help and inspiration from theatre director ‘Agnes Jung Lassen’ . Her research led us to look at a broader spectrum of femininity in art. With this experience we tried to get people to think about how male and female representation in art differs from each other, and how gender in art has such a big impact on the way we perceive a work.

CANDLE
Dear viewer
What are you looking at
What do you want to look at
What draws your attention
What distracts you
Have you ever watched paint dry?
Or watched an entire candle burn?
Try looking at the same crosswalk for an entire day
Or watch a little ladybug walk op and down a leaf
We can look at these things and piece together the information to predict what will happen later
Because these outcomes are logical and easy to understand as a human it might be interesting to let a computer track these patterns and predictions
I can help the computer remember

ESCAPISM
A VR experience about a night out in the body of someone who wants to get out of the daily stress and struggles.
This was for the VR Etude assignment at NFA, In collaboration with production design and scenario students.
